Leucadendron argenteum
Silver Tree
This is one of the most beautiful and rare trees from South Africa and has an important role in our lives at Silver Tree Designs: our namesake! So we would like to share a little information on this beauty; it can only be raised from seed and is generally hard to grow but with success it is an exquisite sight to see. The leaves are long and grey with silky hairs that exude a silver sheen (which are wonderful in arrangements). If you would like to see one there is a pretty one at the UCSC Arboretum in the South African Garden. The bracts (which carry the rather insignificant flower heads) come to be in winter and into the spring. They look so similar to the leaves it can be hard to distinguish. These trees can reach 40’ by 25-30’ with a twisting trunk and intriguing silhouette. Like all Leucadendrons they need fast draining soil. Growing them in pots can be quite successful and satisfying when paired with a bright color. And lastly it is a tree that we at Silver Tree Designs find simply gorgeous.
